I make a honest living helping people go solar, so of course I say its now. But, in the eyes of the consumer I think its now too. Currently the rebates and incentives available for certain people are incredible. We know that the rebates from the electric companies are going to decrease, it’s written into their program. We’ve already seen the commercial rebate decrease, and the residential will soon follow. Some would argue that the prices of the panels will continue to decline with greater economies of scale, but I believe that is very debatable.
One thing most everyone agrees on is that electricity costs from the utility will continue to increase. One way to think about it is to compare going solar to renting or buying a house. We all can agree that if you can afford it, then it definitely makes financial sense to own your home rather that rent it. Well the same applies to your electricity. Without solar, you simply rent your energy from the utility company.
Does it make sense to own your energy? If the price per KWh with solar is less than what you are currently paying from the utility (which it is), then what’s a reasonable argument? The billboards are everywhere. Pay less for electric when you switch to (insert company here). Well guess what? You will always pay less with using solar panels, and its not a one or two year contract! The panels are warranted for 25 years on power output. Try to get a 25 year fixed rate on your electric bill anywhere else. I know you can’t.
